On Friday, January 18 2013, David Van Essen and a host of other neuroscience researchers were invited to give “the talk of their lives.” That is the mandate of the TED conference, which asks speakers to deliver high-level, high-concept presentations in less than 20 minutes.

Dr. Van Essen’s talk is titled “The Human Connectome Project: Relating Brain Circuits to Behavior.” In this 15-minute talk, he illustrates recent advances in charting brain circuits using the method of resting-state functional MRI.  He also discusses the opportunities and challenges in relating brain circuits to individual differences in behavior and in brain structure.

25 speakers in all presented as a part of the independently organized TEDxCalTech, which was held on Friday, January 18, at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. For more information, visit their website: tedxcaltech.caltech.edu
